Porthleven is a picturesque fishing harbour with basic shops, a supermarket,a range of restaurants and cafes, and three pubs. There are also a small number of art and craft shops. Various functions occur by the harbourside throughout the year. There are regattas, gig racing, lifeboat days, and the Porthleven Town Band plays outside The Harbour Inn on Sunday evenings throughout the summer. The Penrose Estate borders Porthleven and a walkaround Loo Pool is recommended. It is the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall and supposedly was formed when the spit of sand known as Loo Bar cut off the river from the sea. Loo Pool is ¼ to ½ mile from Westward. Sea fishing trips can be easily arranged at the harbour, cycling on the relatively quiet country lanes (or around Loo Pool) is enjoyable, and a host of other activities are possible. There is a large range of golf courses to choose from.
